London College of Fashion MA Show
FROW at the 2019 London College of Fashion MA show was a glimpse into the future of sustainable fashion. Deconstructed tailoring, ephemeral silhouettes, African prints and Chinese hats. The creativity of these MA students was incredible.
Danyuan Chan is an MA student who makes 100% sustainable clothes with zero waste. Yes ZERO WASTE. And her stuff is off-the-charts beautiful.
The history of African colonisation is latent in Danyuan’s designs. She explores how African women created a very unique, distinctive style by combining Western Edwardian clothes with their own identity and heritage. It’s thoroughly original and stunningly beautiful. Using the concept of the kanga (a large rectangle of brightly coloured fabric traditionally worn by women, and occasionally men, in the African Great Lakes region), she’s designed her own print, transferred it onto sustainable fabric and created formidable, structured garments.
Here are my favourites from her collection:
And here are my picks from the rest of the show from the very talented Xiaonan Ma, Missy Yue Wu, Huiying Xiong, Chao Yin, Yooju Kim…
I wore Danyuan’s designs to Stella McCartney’s – check out the outfit!
What do you think? Which is your favourite look?
